A session was held on China’s Green Finance Revolution. China is rapidly transitioning from the factory of the world to being a global pioneer in sustainable energy and green finance. The panel discussed how Europe and China can work together to drive investment in ESG.

LuxFLAG was pleased to join the discussion with Fidelity and Columbia Threadneedle on what difference active managers can make in Sustainable Investing on the 26th of September 2019.

Although, there are several ways to approach susatinable investing, the paths share the same aim: combine invstor’s ESG priorities with investment returns. This lunch meeting took a deeper look into how this can be done.

Sachin Vankalas, the General Manager of LuxFLAG explained the importance of ESG today, what it means for professonal investors, how asset management companies can adapt their strategies and how independent cross border labels change this environment.

This was followed by a presentation of the Columbia social bonds fund and the Fidelity Sustainable water and waste fund.

LuxFLAG, the Luxembourg Finance Labelling Agency, is pleased to announce that twenty-four new funds have been granted a LuxFLAG label bringing the total to 158 investment vehicles (84 ESG, 3 Climate Finance, 9 Environment, 32 Microfinance, 21 Green Bonds, 9 Applicant Fund status) as at the 24th September.

These products are domiciled in five jurisdictions viz. Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland and Luxembourg are managed in approx. 15 countries.

The number of LuxFLAG labelled investment vehicles grew by 53.4% since the beginning of the year reflecting the importance of highlighting the ESG credentials of fund products and strong growth in Sustainable investing.

Overview of LuxFLAG’s Associate members

L’entame de l’été a été rythmée par deux annonces majeures au sein de l’agence LuxFLAG: la nomination de Sachin Vankalas en tant que directeur général et celle de Denise Voss à la présidence de l’agence de labellisation. Celle-ci a vu son activité gonfler de près de 30% l’an dernier et la dynamique se maintient à en croire les chiffres de la mi-2019 qui font déjà monter le compteur à 136 labellisations contre 103 en 2018.

Sachin Vankalas, general manager of the Luxembourg Finance Labelling Agency (LuxFLAG), which certifies funds’ ESG credentials, says ESG is playing an increasingly prominent role in the PE space:

“The capital deployed via PE has the potential to have much more impact compared to investments in listed equities. Because PE holdings typically involve significant equity stakes in portfolio companies and board representation, GPs know their portfolio companies better and can influence underlying ESG strategies. Holding periods are also longer in many cases which is very compatible with sustainable investing.”
